Start with the base that removes the biggest risk
Bodrum gives a first crew more than one useful starting pattern. Bodrum town suits guests who want the castle, restaurants and provisioning on foot; Turgutreis suits an operator-led handover with a marina team and clear arrival procedure. Gökova is a rewarding direction, but it should be an option after the crew understands the boat, not a promise that forces a long first leg. Ask for the exact marina and return berth in writing. “Bodrum” can mean different sides of the peninsula, and the transfer, wind angle, provisioning run and first-night plan all change with that choice.

Make the Milas–Bodrum Airport transfer specific
Milas–Bodrum Airport is the international arrival point for the peninsula. The airport’s official transport page lists road transfer options, but the useful booking detail is the destination: send the driver to the named marina office or gate, with the flight number and luggage count. A transfer to “Bodrum” is not precise enough when the boat is in Turgutreis.
Build in time for passport control, provisioning and the handover briefing. If the flight lands late, ask the operator whether the boat can be accessed for luggage only, whether the berth is secured overnight and when the full safety briefing will take place. Darkness and a tired crew are poor reasons to force a departure.
What Turgutreis adds to the first-trip equation
D-Marin Turgutreis currently lists 532 berths, a 150-boat dry dock, 24-hour support for water and electricity, and VHF channel 72 for arrivals. The marina is about 20 kilometres from Bodrum, so it offers an operational alternative to a city-centre start when the crew values a formal dock team and technical backup.
Capacity is not a reservation. Send the operator the boat’s length overall, beam, draft, arrival time, power requirement and any catamaran restrictions. Confirm where to fuel, how lines are handled, which documents are checked and what time the boat must be back on return day.
Use Gökova as a second-stage choice, not a checkbox
The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism presents Bodrum as a starting point for Blue Voyage routes in the Gökova Gulf. That makes Gökova a compelling direction, but the first day still needs a realistic scope: a settled crew, a short opening leg and enough daylight to turn back if the wind or visibility changes.
Keep one simple Bodrum-side fallback in the plan. If the forecast is not convincing, stay near the selected base, practise sail handling and use the next morning for the longer move. Guests remember a confident rhythm more than a rushed list of bays.

Let wind and daylight set the pace
Check the Turkish State Meteorological Service Bodrum forecast and the current 24-hour marine report before leaving. The peninsula can offer very different conditions on its western and eastern sides, and a route that looks short can become uncomfortable when the wind turns against the return. Leave early, keep one main stop per day and agree the turn-back point before the crew departs.
When gusts, visibility or fatigue move outside the crew’s comfort zone, stay near Bodrum or Turgutreis and shorten the plan. Gökova remains available for a later day; it is not worth trading a safe first charter for a fixed promise.
Documents, costs and a clean handover message
Ask for a quote that separates charter, transit log or local paperwork, fuel, marina nights, cleaning, deposit, skipper and transfers. Confirm whether the operator handles local check-in, whether the boat carries the required safety gear and what happens if weather prevents the planned return berth.
