Use the west coast as a refuge chain
The west of Mallorca rewards a crew that plans decisions, not landmarks. Palma handles the handover and final paperwork; Port d’Andratx gives you a practical stop beside Sa Dragonera; Port de Sóller is the natural reset before the long return. Official Balearic tourism material specifically links the western itinerary with Sant Elm, Dragonera and Sóller, which is why this route moves in stages rather than attempting a complete island circuit.
The key safety rule is daylight on the exposed leg. If the latest forecast makes the sea state uncomfortable, you can still deliver a good week by staying in Palma Bay, using Port d’Andratx as the turnaround, or making Sóller a shore excursion. A west Mallorca route should never depend on one berth or one perfect afternoon.
| Day | Decision, stop and overnight |
|---|---|
| 1 — Palma base | Handover, fuel, provisions and a marina night; record the hard checkout hour. |
| 2 — Palma Bay → Port d’Andratx | A manageable westbound leg; keep Cala Llamp or a confirmed port as the evening choice. |
| 3 — Sant Elm and Dragonera window | Visit the park by approved local boat or shore transfer; do not turn a nature stop into an anchor gamble. |
| 4 — Port d’Andratx recovery | Short swim, provisioning top-up and a second forecast; keep the crew rested for the Tramuntana coast. |
| 5 — Andratx → Sóller | Make the longer coast run in the morning; if the window closes, stop south and keep Sóller for land. |
| 6 — Sóller → Palma | Return in daylight with a fuel and engine margin; do not leave the final run for checkout morning. |
| 7 — Checkout | Inventory, fuel receipt, deposit paperwork and airport transfer. |
Palma or Andratx: choose by handover friction
Palma is the default when flights, a large provision run or a late arrival drive the decision. Confirm the exact marina and whether the charter company permits after-hours check-in. The westbound plan then starts with a short, low-pressure leg instead of spending Day 1 on an ambitious crossing.
Port d’Andratx can save miles if the operator has a confirmed berth and the crew arrives early enough for a proper handover. The official tourism listing describes 310 moorings and a working fishing-and-nautical port, but capacity is not a promise for your dates. Compare the [fleet](/fleet), send preferred dates through [Helm](/helm), and request the berth, draft and shore-power terms in writing.
Make Dragonera a daylight nature window
Sa Dragonera is a protected nature park opposite Sant Elm, separated from Mallorca by a narrow channel. Official guidance points visitors to access by boat from Sant Elm, Santa Ponça, Peguera or Port d’Andratx. For a charter, that means the park visit is a shore or local-boat activity, while the yacht’s overnight decision belongs to the current sea state and berth availability.
The west coast can look inviting while a Tramuntana swell is already building outside. Set a latest safe arrival time for Sóller and a hard turnaround time for the boat; if either is missed, remain in the Andratx area and keep the park visit on land. This is a better guest experience than arriving tired to a full harbour.
| Leg | Range for a 40–50 ft charter | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Palma → Port d’Andratx | ≈20–28 nm · 4–6 h | Berth, fuel and arrival window. |
| Andratx → Sant Elm / Dragonera | ≈4–8 nm · short local leg | Protected-zone access and local boat option. |
| Andratx → Port de Sóller | ≈28–36 nm · 5–7 h | Forecast, daylight and a confirmed berth. |
| Sóller → Palma | ≈24–32 nm · 5–7 h | Fuel margin and early departure; no checkout-morning run. |
Sóller is the reset before the return
Port de Sóller sits in a closed bay and is presented by the official tourism guide as a calm harbour and a good base for sailing or a coastal walk. Use that shelter to reset the crew, charge devices, check the engine and re-read the forecast. Do not treat the harbour as an automatic guarantee: request a berth, arrival instructions and the latest local notice.
If the forecast is deteriorating, Sóller becomes a decision point rather than a must-see. Leave for Palma only when the return window is comfortably inside daylight; otherwise stay put, notify the base and activate the agreed Plan B. Never trade a protected night for a late arrival at an unconfirmed berth.
Two west-coast scenarios and a realistic budget
Scenario A — settled sea: Palma to Andratx on Day 2, a Dragonera window on Day 3, Sóller on Day 5 and Palma on Day 6. Scenario B — Tramuntana, swell or low visibility: use Palma Bay and Andratx as the core, skip the exposed Andratx–Sóller leg, and make Sóller a land transfer only if the operator can arrange it. Confirm the marine forecast every morning.
Planning allowance checked 14 September 2026: separate the yacht quote from fuel, marina nights, local Dragonera transfer, provisions, deposit and cancellation exposure. Ask for a live quote with berth availability and the exact return deadline before paying. A slightly higher Palma night can be cheaper than a forced final passage.
West Mallorca departure checklist
- Confirm Palma or Andratx base berth, draft, fuel and after-hours handover.
- Save the latest Dragonera protected-area and landing instructions.
- Set a hard turnaround time before the Andratx–Sóller leg.
- Reconfirm the Sóller berth and the Palma return window on Day 5.
- Keep fuel, deposit, insurance and cancellation terms as separate budget lines.
