How to Choose a Yacht Charter Format: Bareboat, Skippered or Crewed

Choose a charter format by deciding who is responsible for the yacht, route and daily life on board. Bareboat suits a capable independent crew; a skippered charter puts navigation with a professional; a crewed charter adds more service.

The three formats at a glance

The right format is not about calling yourself an experienced sailor. It is about who will manage the yacht, make safety decisions, plan the route and organise life on board.

Ask for the exact services in the quotation. Operators may use similar labels while including different people and responsibilities.

Bareboat: an independent charter

On a bareboat charter your group is responsible for operating the yacht, its handover, navigation, mooring and day-to-day decisions. The operator decides whether the named skipper meets its requirements for that yacht and destination.

Requirements vary by country, base, operator and yacht. Send documents in advance and obtain confirmation rather than assuming a certificate is accepted everywhere.

A skippered charter: professional navigation

A skipper manages the yacht and helps make realistic route decisions around weather, distances and berths. The group still agrees its holiday priorities, but the skipper makes the final safety call.

A skipper is not automatically a cook, guide or organiser of every detail. Confirm their fee, cabin, meals, provisioning help and the contact process before booking.

A crewed charter: more service, more detail to confirm

A crewed yacht may include a captain, host, chef, steward or other professionals. The team and service level depend on the individual yacht, not only the word ‘crewed’.

Ask exactly what is included and what remains variable: provisions, drinks, fuel, marina berths, transfers and operational expenses can be structured differently.

Questions before booking

  • Who is named as responsible for yacht operation?
  • Does the operator accept the bareboat skipper's documents?
  • What services are included in the skipper or crew fee?
  • Who pays for the skipper's meals and cabin?
  • Which costs are fixed and which depend on the route?
  • What are the cancellation, date-change and yacht-replacement rules?
  • Who is the contact on handover day?

Compare responsibility, not only comfort

Choose bareboat when your group is genuinely prepared to manage the yacht. Choose a skipper when you want professional navigation but remain active in the trip. Choose crew when the group wants to delegate more daily service.

If one purchase combines a charter with other travel services, its legal treatment may differ from stand-alone yacht hire. For EU package travel, the organiser must provide clear information about the total price, included services and cancellation terms when the rules apply.

Frequently asked

Do I need a licence for a bareboat charter?
Requirements depend on the country, operator and yacht. Send the proposed skipper's documents before booking and obtain the operator's confirmation.
Can I add a skipper after booking bareboat?
Sometimes, if a skipper is available and the operator can amend the booking. Confirm this before payment because it depends on dates and contract terms.
Does a skipper choose the route without guests?
No. Guests and skipper discuss the route, but the skipper can change the plan when weather or safety requires it.
Who pays for a skipper's meals?
It depends on the offer and contract. Clarify meals, cabin and any separate fee before you book.
Does crewed always mean a chef and full service?
No. Crew composition varies by yacht. Ask who will be aboard and which tasks are included.
