Start with the moment, then choose the boat
Decide whether the proposal happens under sail, at anchor, on a swim platform or during a sunset return. Tell the charter team what must remain a surprise, who knows the plan, whether a photographer is needed and how much walking or tender use your partner is comfortable with.
A crewed catamaran usually gives the easiest private layout: stable cockpit, shade, separate service area and room for a small table. A monohull can feel more intimate, but verify heel, cockpit access and where a ring box can be secured.

Build a private cue system with the skipper
Use one neutral phrase for “ready”, one gesture or message for “not yet” and one non-negotiable abort signal. The skipper should know the preferred anchorage, lighting, music level, photography angle and whether the ring appears before or after the toast.
Keep the ring in a waterproof, zipped case held by one named crew member. Do not place it in an open pocket, champagne bucket or loose prop. Ask how the boat handles valuables and whether the photographer is crew, a shore vendor or an independent contractor.
Proposal-day run of show
Before departure: confirm forecast, route, ring custody, photographer, music and the exact return buffer. On board: safety briefing first, then a normal lunch or swim stop so the surprise does not feel rushed. At the chosen moment: the skipper reduces distractions, the photographer stays invisible and the crew avoids steering changes mid-question. After the answer: a quiet toast, photographs and a low-pressure return.
If the wind or privacy is wrong, the Plan B is a shorter sail or a shore-side sunset. The surprise is the question, not a specific GPS coordinate.
