Start with the archipelago, not a map full of pins

Use short hops to learn the boat
Plan the first sailing day as a calibration day, not a race. Match the boat to the people, not the postcard
A crewed catamaran is the safest default for a mixed group: level cockpit, shade, a wide swim platform and separate space for the skipper. Confirm the certified day capacity and cabin layout, because the number of beds is not the same as the comfortable number of day guests.
Choose a monohull when the group explicitly wants sailing feel, tighter manoeuvres and a more compact social space. Treat Malta’s wind as a route rule
Transport Malta describes Malta’s climate as Mediterranean, with mean air temperatures from 12.4°C in winter to 26.3°C in summer. The same official yachting page notes that most rainfall comes in October–December, while north-westerly winds are common. These are climate references, not a forecast for your dates; use the forecast and the skipper’s briefing for each passage.
Ask the operator to show exactly where the route goes if the prevailing wind freshens: stay on a sheltered coast, shorten the Comino stop, use a marina night or return early. A safe Malta charter is allowed to look less ambitious on paper. Never force a crossing because a restaurant, beach or flight connection is non-refundable.
