A group charter needs a small operating agreement
Before paying, agree who books the boat, who collects money, how cancellations work and how shared expenses are recorded. Decide whether the quote is split per person, per cabin or by an agreed weighting. The cheapest approach is the one that prevents a dispute in the cockpit.
Assign light roles: provisions, expense log, shore reservations, morning weather brief and cabin inventory. Roles can rotate, but the skipper’s navigation and safety decisions do not become a group vote.
| Decision | Write it down |
|---|---|
| Cabins | Who sleeps where and how a premium cabin changes the split. |
| Food | Allergies, breakfast standard, restaurant nights and provisioning budget. |
| Sailing pace | How much time is for sailing, swimming and shore evenings. |
| Expenses | Fuel, marinas, transfers, deposit and final cleaning. |
Choose social space before maximum berths
Friends spend more time together on deck than in cabins, so compare cockpit width, shade, sound, swim platform and galley flow. A yacht that technically sleeps ten may feel cramped when everyone eats, dries towels and plans the next stop in one small space.
Croatia’s short passages make it possible to alternate a swim-heavy day, a longer sailing day and an evening in town. Tell the skipper which moments matter most. A route built around every friend’s priority is more memorable than a generic list of famous islands.

Agree how the money moves
Use one shared record for fuel, marina receipts, groceries, transfers and shore bookings. Croatia’s official services publish information on fees, ports, anchorages and crew registration; the charter company should explain which items are prepaid and which are settled onboard.
Decide whether restaurant nights are inside or outside the shared budget. Also agree a limit for optional toys, taxis and late berth changes. Small decisions made before departure protect friendships better than a perfect spreadsheet after the trip.

Friends’ charter checklist
- Cabins and cost split are agreed before the deposit.
- The group has one expense log and a cancellation rule.
- Cockpit, shade, galley and swim platform fit the group size.
- The skipper knows sailing, swimming, food and nightlife priorities.
- A weather alternative and one quiet night are included.
