Choose the base by the final-day risk
Zadar gives the strongest city logistics and airport access. Sukošan is convenient for charter handover, while Biograd and Marina Kornati put the southern entrance to the archipelago closer. Ask the operator for the exact checkout berth, fuel dock and Saturday return deadline before you draw the loop.
The route should never depend on a single unreserved anchorage. In July and August, keep one marina or concessioned buoy as a booked fallback each night. If the crew values swimming over port towns, choose a base that shortens the final morning rather than one that looks central on a map.
| Day | Plan / note |
|---|---|
| 1 — Handover in Zadar/Sukošan/Biograd | Stores, fuel and safety briefing; sleep at base. |
| 2 — Base to southern Kornati | Sail south in daylight; enter the park with the correct ticket and landing plan. |
| 3 — Kornati islands | Keep a short leg and a protected dinner anchorage or booked mooring. |
| 4 — Kornati to Dugi Otok | Cross to Telašćica or a northern bay on Dugi Otok; reassess waves before the open leg. |
| 5 — Telašćica, Sali or Pantera | Mix a park visit with a low-mileage recovery day. |
| 6 — Dugi Otok to base-side island | Return south through the island chain; stop early if Saturday fuel or checkout is strict. |
| 7 — Early return | Be alongside with time for fuel, inventory and paperwork. |
Kornati and Telašćica: plan the protected areas first
Kornati National Park is a ticketed, regulated destination, not a place to improvise a landing. Use Visit Kornati for current admission, permitted moorings and visitor guidance, then confirm what your charter company includes. Telašćica on Dugi Otok is a separate protected area with its own current entrance conditions.
Do not assume that a bay shown on an old cruising guide is available today. Park zoning, concession buoys, weather exposure and local notices can change. Carry a backup port on Dugi Otok, such as Sali or a confirmed northern option, before leaving Kornati.
Distances, wind and passage discipline
Treat distance estimates as planning ranges: a charter yacht’s speed changes with wind angle, reefing, traffic and time spent entering a bay. Split the southern Kornati–Dugi Otok move if the forecast shows a short steep sea. Leaving at first light is safer than trying to rescue a late afternoon arrival.
| Planning leg | Plan / note |
|---|---|
| Zadar/Sukošan → Kornati | ≈25–35 nm depending on base and island; plan 5–7 h |
| Kornati → Telašćica | ≈12–20 nm; keep a daylight window |
| Dugi Otok → base | ≈25–40 nm; choose an early southern stop if needed |
Weather Plan B: stay inside the chain
When a bora or strong northerly is forecast, favour the lee of Dugi Otok and shorten the return. When a southerly builds, do not turn an exposed crossing into a fixed promise: keep a second night in Telašćica or Sali and move only when wave height and gusts are acceptable.
Make the route useful for different crews
A family crew can spend more time on Dugi Otok and use Kornati as a scenic half-day, while an experienced crew can keep the southern park nights and add a longer Pantera or Sali leg. Do not promise every island: the value of this route is the contrast between stone islets, open blue water and a protected bay.
In July and August, call ahead for park moorings and marina berths. In June or September, you may have more flexibility, but check daylight, water temperature and the operator’s working hours. A late arrival at a full concession buoy is not a scenic experience; set a hard arrival time and move before it.
Use a two-forecast rule
Before each longer leg, compare the official marine forecast with a second model and the sea-state observation from the base. A stable wind with low waves can be comfortable; a moderate wind against current may create a short, uncomfortable sea. If the models disagree, shorten the leg and keep the next bay inside the chain.
Costs, documents and local rules
Budget the charter, fuel, marina or buoy nights, Kornati and Telašćica entrance fees, tourist tax and the deposit separately. Croatia requires foreign vessels to complete the applicable cruising or vignette formalities before anchoring, and waste must be landed ashore. Verify the current process with the harbour master or charter base.
Before leaving the base
- Confirm whether the charter includes park tickets or only the berth.
- Download current park zoning, mooring and visitor notices.
- Book a Saturday fuel/checkout slot and a southern fallback berth.
- Set a wave-height and daylight limit for the Kornati–Dugi Otok crossing.
