Dubrovnik–Mljet–Korčula–Lastovo by yacht: a seven-day route with a weather buffer

The safest seven-day plan from Dubrovnik is not a race to tick every island. Use ACI Marina Dubrovnik as the operational base, keep Mljet and Korčula as the core, and reserve one flexible day for Lastovo or an earlier return when wind and berths change.

Start with the operating constraints

Base the boat at ACI Marina Dubrovnik or another confirmed Dubrovnik marina berth. The first and last day are not full sailing days: allow time for handover, provisioning, fuel and checkout. A seven-day charter therefore has five useful route nights plus one weather decision night.

Keep the order flexible. If the forecast shows a strong southerly or afternoon thunderstorm, stop at Mljet, shorten the Korčula leg, or return west inside the island chain. A route that finishes near Dubrovnik is more robust than one that leaves a long open-water return for Saturday morning.

DayPlan / note
1 — Dubrovnik handoverCheck-in, stores, fuel; sleep at base or nearby Gruž.
2 — Dubrovnik to Polače or Pomena, MljetAbout 15 nm; enter the park only after arranging the boat ticket and berth/anchorage.
3 — Mljet lakes, then KorčulaShort park excursion, then roughly 12 nm to Korčula Town or Lumbarda.
4 — Korčula and nearby covesUse this as a recovery day for a late arrival or a calm swim stop.
5 — Lastovo optionOnly in a stable forecast: Lastovo is an exposed extension, so confirm the return window first.
6 — Korčula/Mljet bufferIf Lastovo is cancelled, stay on Mljet or move toward Šipan/Elaphiti for a shorter return.
7 — Return and checkoutPlan to be alongside early; fuel, damage check and checkout are not optional buffers.

Mljet National Park is a rules stop, not a free-for-all anchorage

For a visiting vessel, arrange the park permission or boat ticket before treating Mljet as a night stop. The park identifies Pomena and Polače as designated berthing or anchoring areas; strict protection zones are off-limits. Within 150 metres of the shore, the speed limit is 5 knots.

Do not discharge wastewater or leave rubbish. Ask the park office or marina operator about current fees, berth availability and whether your vessel length changes the ticket price; these details are seasonal and can change.

Distances and realistic passage times

Published park information places Dubrovnik–Mljet at roughly 15 nautical miles and Mljet–Korčula at about 12 nautical miles. Add a 20–30% time margin for a charter boat, manoeuvring, traffic and a conservative reefing decision. Lastovo is the leg to remove first if the wind window is uncertain.

LegPlan / note
Dubrovnik → Mljet≈15 nm · 3–4 h under engine/sail mix
Mljet → Korčula≈12 nm · 2.5–3.5 h
Korčula → LastovoPlan 20–25 nm depending on port; keep daylight
Mljet/Šipan → Dubrovnik≈15–25 nm; shorten with Šipan or Elaphiti

Weather buffer and Plan B

Check the marine forecast twice daily and compare wind, gusts, wave height and thunderstorm timing. In a southerly pattern, keep the boat inside the lee of Mljet and Korčula rather than forcing the exposed Lastovo leg. In an unsettled forecast, make Day 5 a second Mljet night and return to Dubrovnik on Day 6.

Choose the right base and final-night rhythm

ACI Marina Dubrovnik is the cleanest operational anchor because fuel, check-in and checkout stay in one known place. Ask the charter company whether the contract requires returning to the exact berth or only to the base area. That answer changes whether Šipan is a sensible final night or whether you should come back on Day 6.

For families, plan the park visit before lunch and a short swim stop after it. For experienced sailors, use the afternoon as a trim and reefing window, not as a promise to reach Lastovo. The best route is the one that keeps the final 25 nautical miles boring.

Seasonality changes the decision rules

June and September usually give more room in marinas and a calmer shore experience, but daylight and wind windows can be less forgiving than in high summer. July and August bring the strongest berth pressure: call ahead for Korčula, Pomena and Polače, and treat every unreserved anchorage as a Plan B rather than a guarantee.

After a cold front, reassess the Lastovo option even if the morning looks clear. Gusts and residual swell can arrive later than the visual weather. Keep the skipper’s go/no-go decision explicit in the log so the crew does not feel pressured by the original itinerary.

DecisionPlan / note
Stable forecast, calm seaKeep Lastovo as Day 5 option.
Southeasterly or thunderstorm lineStay in Mljet/Korčula shelter; shorten the return.
Berths full at Pomena/PolačeUse the confirmed alternative, not an improvised protected-zone anchorage.

Budget, documents and berth logic

Budget separately for the charter, fuel, marina or buoy nights, Mljet park tickets, Korčula/Lastovo port fees, tourist tax and a security deposit. Confirm skipper licence requirements, crew list, boat vignette or cruising documents, insurance and check-in time. Croatia’s nautical guidance warns that anchoring can be prohibited in marked or concessioned zones; a berth reservation is not a luxury on a Saturday in July.

Departure checklist

  • Ask the operator for the latest berth plan in Dubrovnik, Mljet and Korčula.
  • Buy or reserve the Mljet National Park boat ticket before arrival.
  • Set a hard go/no-go time for the Lastovo leg and a daylight return limit.
  • Save marina, park office, port authority and charter-base contacts offline.

Συχνές ερωτήσεις

Is Dubrovnik–Mljet–Korčula–Lastovo realistic in seven days?
Yes, if Lastovo is optional and the handover day is protected. Treat Mljet and Korčula as the core; add Lastovo only with a stable forecast and a confirmed return window.
Do I need a ticket to visit Mljet by yacht?
Visiting vessels should arrange the National Park boat ticket or permission and use the designated areas. Confirm current fee and booking steps with the park before departure.
Where is the safest fallback if Lastovo is too windy?
Stay on the sheltered side of Mljet or Korčula, or shorten the return via Šipan and the Elaphiti. Do not make the exposed leg just to preserve the original map.
Can I anchor anywhere in Mljet National Park?
No. Use the designated Pomena or Polače areas and respect strict protection zones, speed limits and waste rules. Check the park’s current notice for your vessel.
Which port should be the final night?
Choose the base marina if the charter contract requires it. If the operator allows a nearby stop, Šipan or another Elaphiti anchorage can reduce the final morning distance, but confirm fuel and checkout logistics first.
